Ticked off..

Gross! I know!

This bugger was feeding for a while. Must have gotten on "the Wagg" when we stopped for a break on the road trip and he stepped into the brush. Found it right near his whiskers. Cotton ball with some tick killer let it back out without leaving any behind... ugh :(

Groomed and frontlined! No one is safe!

I had nothing...

...until this bee landed on my porch to wipe away some of it's payload. He was so weighted down that he couldn't fly anymore before wiping away some of his precious pollen.

Now I have a mellow yellow post and you have some desktop images. So click the images to open them at full size and save them to use on your desktop :)

Caught in flight...

I don't think that either of these are that special... but I've been working on getting images of insects in flight. So I'll put these out there as a "work in progress."

Measured in fear...

I was trimming back my out-of-control holly tree and came face to... um... pincers with this stick-like creature. Upon closer inspection I realized that it looked like a HUGE inchworm. Now, the a inchworms I've seen in the past were cute and would crawl along an inch at a time. This monster was as thick as a No. 2 pencil and about 6 inches long! Do you dare click this image for a desktop sized version???

It was hanging upside own and VERY still with a piece of silk connecting its body to a lower branch. I thought it might be getting ready to spin a cocoon, but it was gone when I checked for it the next day. For that moment where I stared from an inch away... a hint of fear... and a bit of disgust ;)

What the?...

I see these often during the summers on Long Island.

But are they flying ants? Or flies that LOOK like ants?

I have a few more critters for the next few days.
Check back daily! :)

Revenge of the revenge of the fly...

Although they make me think of filth...

...I can't help but love everything about these compound-eyed, sticky-footed, regurgitating, long haired, maggot creating insects.

Tree beetle...

...or a baby roach in the wild? Really not sure what this is. Looks too "squat" to be a roach... and the fact that it was out in broad daylight doesn't go with the whole skittering in the sewers and staying in the dark. Unless it was rabid! :O Can insects be rabid? Does he have a little foamy mouth? Are you tired of my rambling?

Fly-bee-thing...

It hovered in place.

It darted about.

It buzzed LOUDLY!

Then a female appeared with what looked like honey on her back...

And he must have liked it... because he mated in an instant.

Trip on a log...

While looking at some firewood in my yard I noticed some bugs traveling along and around the logs. There were two different bugs (one black and one red) but they were both just millimeters in size. Sometimes you really have to just sit and observe to see something that is ordinarily right under your nose.

The red bug reminds me of a cicada... only on an itty bitty scale.
