I took a walk through Belmont Lake State Park and came across two of these ferns at different locations. I couldn't bring myself to unfurl them for fear of some creature leaping on my face and implanting a larva into my chest to later hatch into a man eating creature... I think I watch too many movies.
Has anyone else seen anything like this or know what might have been in there?

I've never seen anything like that, but I'll bet you anything that the big, freaky bug from Pan's Labyrinth was in there. So you were probably wise not to unfurl that thing.
Is it those cicadas wreaking havoc?
Whatever you do, DO NOT disturb the fern. Whatever did that went to a lot of trouble to stay cozy and hidden!
There used to be fern like plants that when you touched them they would curl up. It was the coolest thing.
But I'm with the others - don't risk disturbing whatever is in there!!!
That's cool and freaky and a great shot.
I'd love to know what's in there though!
