How much of that herding is from training and how much is just Border Collie instinct? I've heard that big families (three or more kids) who own Border Collies have a hard time with the Collies constantly wanting to "herd" the kids.
I was just going to ask the same thing as Darrell. Do they naturally see these fluffy white things and want to chase them into neat little corners?
I felt so bad when that one terrified sheep ran into the wall and knocked himself out. I once got chased into traffic by a Doberman so I could relate. I didn't get hit by any cars and never pedaled my bike faster, but I had to stay on the other side of the busy 4-lane road while the dog paced back and forth on the other side. I guess I was herded...
That was actually from a HIC (herding instinct certification) which is to see if the dog has any interest in the sheep and can figure out what to do. Most BCs just know what to do but some don't have the instinct.
Towards the end of the video you will notice two BCs in the field. The one in the foreground is taking his instinct test and the other is a real working farm dog.
And yes, if small kids run... the collies will want to herd them. You have to be careful because some are known to nip at the heels of sheep... and sometimes small children.

OUCH! Poor sheep!! Your dogs are so pretty and sure can run!!
Awesome!
Our dogs like smelly stuff to roll in, too.

Those sheep didn't stand a chance!!
I'm glad I'm not a dog because I hate smelly stuff, and I certainly don't want to roll in it.
